Storyline 360: Controlling Navigation in 360° Images
Article Last Updated Apr 20, 2026
This article applies to:
Whether you want learners to explore freely or follow a guided path when exploring 360° images, Storyline 360 gives you control over how interactions begin and progress, making learning more dynamic and intentional. Read on to learn how to set the starting view, choose navigation modes, and track learner progress.
Set the Initial View
Want learners to start in a certain part of the image? You can set the opening view of your interaction.
In the 360° image editor, go to the Interaction tab, click Edit, then move the camera to your preferred angle. As you move the camera, the latitude and longitude values update in real time. Click Set to save your changes, Reset to return to the original view, or Cancel to discard your changes.
Tips:
- The initial view can be set only in Free navigation mode (see below). In Guided tour mode, the Edit option is disabled, and the starting view is determined by the first marker in the sequence.
- To center the opening view around an interactive element, select a hotspot or marker from the Markers & Hotspots panel before adjusting the camera.
Choose Navigation Options
You can choose how learners move through your interaction—freely or in a guided tour.
In the 360° image editor, go to the Markers & Hotspots panel and choose either Free navigation or Guided tour.
Free navigation lets learners explore at their own pace. Mark the Show progress indicator box to help learners track which elements they visited.
Guided tour directs learners through interactive elements in a specific order. Markers and hotspots appear one at a time in the order they appear in the Markers & Hotspots panel. You can drag the interactive elements to reorder them. A progress indicator always displays at the bottom.
Pro Tips:
- Use hotspot hints to make interactive elements easier to spot in guided-tour interactions.
- Provide bite-sized info through hover states on markers and hotspots in free-navigation interactions.
Exclude Markers and Hotspots from Progress Tracking
You can customize how progress is calculated in free-navigation interactions.
By default, all markers and hotspots count toward the progress indicator. For example, learners may see “1 of 5 visited” after selecting their first interactive element.
To exclude specific elements:
- In the 360° image editor, ensure Free navigation is selected.
- In the Markers & Hotspots panel on the left, hover over the marker or hotspot you’d like to exclude.
- Click the ellipsis (…) and mark the Exclude from progress count box.
Excluded elements display a dashed border in their panel.
