Storyline 360: Managing Slide Layers and Project Variables With AI

Article Last Updated Jun 9, 2026

This article applies to:

Working with slide layers and project variables doesn’t have to be a hassle, even in complex projects with numerous interactions. AI Chat simplifies these tasks by letting you control layers and variables with plain-language prompts. Continue reading to find out how.

Manage Slide Layers

Chat with AI to create and organize slide layers without switching views or adjusting each setting manually. Explore the following ways to manage layers with AI, along with sample prompts to get started. Note that these prompts only work on the current slide.

Add Slide Layers

Create a new layer by using prompts such as “Add a layer called Feedback” or “Create a layer named Correct Answer.”

Rename Slide Layers

Rename existing layers with prompts like, “Rename Untitled Layer 2 to Objectives” or “Change the Results layer name to Summary.”

List Slide Layers

Show a list of layers on the current slide so you can quickly review them. You can say, “List the layers on this slide” or “What layers do I have on this slide?”

Modify Layer Properties

Update slide layer properties, including visibility, behavior, seeking, and revisit settings, with these sample prompts:

  • “Hide other slide layers when the Feedback layer opens.”
  • “Set Allow seeking for the Feedback layer to Yes.”
  • “Present the Feedback layer as a dialog.”
  • “Pause the base layer timeline when the Feedback layer opens.”
  • “Set the Feedback layer to reset to its initial state when revisiting.”

Delete Slide Layers

Remove slide layers you no longer need with prompts like, “Delete the Hint layer” or “Remove the Summary layer from this slide.”

Tips:

  • Be specific when asking AI to delete empty or unused layers. AI may not know which layers qualify as empty or unused unless you identify them.
  • You can easily move or copy shapes between layers. For example, “Move the Warning shape to the Feedback layer” or “Copy all shapes from the base slide to the Content layer.”
  • When you ask to duplicate a layer, it’s helpful to specify whether you want objects duplicated as well.
  • Moving layers (and their objects) to a different slide isn’t currently supported.

Manage Project Variables

You can also use AI Chat to set up and maintain project variables in one place. Review the following variable-related tasks AI can help with, then try the sample prompts.

Add Variables

Create text, number, or true/false variables with prompts like, “Add a number variable named ScoreTotal” or “Create a text variable called LearnerName.”

Rename Variables

Rename existing variables using prompts such as “Rename Variable1 to LearnerName” or “Change ScoreTotal to FinalScore.”

List Variables

Review existing variables in your project using prompts like, “List all variables in this project,” or “Show me the true/false variables.”

Modify Variables

Update a variable’s default value by saying something like, “Change CourseComplete to false” or “Set the default value of ScoreTotal to 0.”

Delete Variables

If you have project variables you no longer need, remove them with prompts such as, “Delete the variables called Variable1 and Variable2,” or “Delete unused variables.”

If you're not sure which variables are unused, ask AI to list all variables and show where they're used in your project. Note that the usage list doesn't include JavaScript variable references. However, when you use AI Chat to delete unused variables, any associated JavaScript variable references are removed as well. Built-in variables are never deleted.
