This article applies to:
Working with shapes on a slide often involves repeating the same steps across multiple objects. You can build polished, consistent slide designs with less manual effort by using a simple chat prompt to add new shapes and update existing ones. Keep reading to learn more.
Add or Format Shapes on a Slide
Creating shapes and adjusting properties such as fill color, size, position, and more is easy with AI. To get started, go to Slide View and follow these steps:
- On the right side of the screen, click the AI Assistant tab.
- Use the chat box at the bottom to enter your prompts.
- Describe the changes you want to make.
Example prompts:
- “Add a red circle to the slide.”
- “Change the rectangle’s color to blue.”
- “Align the shapes horizontally at the bottom.”
AI applies the changes right away. If the result isn’t what you wanted, click Undo in the AI response or ask to revert the changes in the chat.
Understand Supported Shapes and Actions
Use AI to create built-in shapes you’d typically find in the Shapes dropdown on the ribbon, such as:
- Lines
- Rectangles
- Basic shapes, including text boxes and buttons
- Block arrows
- Equation shapes
- Stars
- Callouts
You can also update a shape’s appearance, including:
- Fill color: Change the inside color of a selected shape.
- Line color: Change the color of a shape’s outline.
- Line style: Adjust outline properties such as line weight, dash style, or other border formatting.
- Corner radius: Round or sharpen the corners of supported shapes.
- Font style: Change the font style, color, and size of text within shapes.
Update a shape’s layout and positioning by changing these properties:
- Size: Make selected shapes larger, smaller, or the same size as others.
- Position: Move shapes to a specific place on the slide.
- Alignment: Align shapes with each other or with the slide.
- Rotation: Rotate or flip selected shapes.
- Grouping: Group or ungroup selected shapes. (Note that AI can modify a shape within a group, but it can’t change a shape within a state.)
Pro Tip: In addition to adding and formatting shapes, you can also ask AI to change the slide background.
