Storyline 360: Using Feedback Masters
Article Last Updated May 27, 2026
This article applies to:
Control the look and feel of your question feedback from one place with feedback masters. Each feedback master includes layouts for managing default colors, fonts, text, and other objects used across feedback layers in your course. When you update a feedback master or layout, the changes automatically apply to the feedback layers that use them. You’ll spend less time on repetitive formatting and more time creating quality content. Keep reading to learn more.

Access Feedback Masters
You’ll need to switch to the Feedback Master view to access feedback masters. Go to the View tab on the ribbon and click Feedback Master.
Here’s what to expect once you’re in Feedback Master view:
Every course has at least one feedback master. Thumbnails for all your feedback masters appear in the left panel. If you haven’t created any yet, you’ll see the default one. Feedback master thumbnails are slightly larger than the layout thumbnails beneath them.
Each feedback master is a collection of layouts for various types of feedback, including Correct, Incorrect, Try Again, Review, and Thank You. Layouts inherit all the properties of their feedback master, but you can customize each one independently. For example, your correct feedback layout might use affirmative text and images, while your incorrect feedback layout has placeholders for corrective content.
Add Feedback Masters and Layouts
To add a new feedback master, switch to the Feedback Master view, then do either of the following:
- Go to the Feedback Master tab and click the Insert Slide Master drop-down arrow to choose a style.
- Right-click anywhere in the left panel and select Insert Slide Master.
To add a layout to a feedback master, select it in the left panel, then go to the Feedback Master tab and click Insert Layout. You can also right-click the feedback master thumbnail and select Insert Layout.
The new layout inherits the properties of its feedback master and includes a title placeholder by default. You can delete or hide the title placeholder if you don’t need it.
Tip: New projects use the accessible feedback master by default.
Manage Feedback Masters and Layouts
To delete a feedback master and all its layouts, select it in the left panel and press Delete on your keyboard. You can also click Delete on the ribbon. To delete just a layout, select it and do the same. Note that you can’t delete a feedback master or layout that’s in use by slides in your course.
To rename a feedback master or layout, select it, go to the Feedback Master tab, and click Rename. You can also right-click it and select Rename Master or Rename Layout.
To preserve a feedback master you aren’t using but want to keep for later, select it, go to the Feedback Master tab, and click Preserve. You can also right-click it and select Preserve Master.
To duplicate a feedback master or layout, right-click it in the left panel and select Duplicate Slide Master or Duplicate Layout.
To find all slides using a specific feedback master or layout, right-click it in the left panel and select Show Slides Using This Master or Show Slides Using This Layout. A window opens with a list of all slides that reference the selected master or layout. Each slide appears as a clickable link, letting you jump directly to it.
When you’re done working in the Feedback Master view, go to the Feedback Master tab and click Close Master View. Any changes you made are automatically applied to the slides in your course.
Tip: Set default slide layer properties, such as accessibility attributes and revisiting behavior, for feedback masters and layouts. Learn more.
Design Feedback Masters and Layouts
To design your feedback masters and layouts, use the Home, Insert, Transitions, and Animations tabs on the ribbon. You can also use the following tools on the Feedback Master tab:
Theme Preview
Feedback masters don’t have themes of their own. They inherit colors and fonts from the slides they’re applied to, which means the same feedback layout can look different across slides if your course uses multiple design themes.
When you open the Feedback Master view, layouts default to the colors and fonts of the last slide you viewed. To preview how your layouts look with a different theme, click a thumbnail in the Theme Preview gallery.
Previewing a theme doesn’t change your actual feedback layers. To change colors and fonts, use the Home and Format tabs on the ribbon.
Background Styles
To apply a background style, hover over an option in the Background Styles drop-down to preview it, then click to apply it to the current feedback master. To apply it to a specific layout only, right-click the style and choose Apply Only to This Slide.
To customize a background, click Format Background and use the Fill and Picture tabs. Learn more about changing the background design.
Note that the following options apply only to layouts.
Insert Placeholder
To add a placeholder to a layout, open the Insert Placeholder drop-down and choose a type: content, text, picture, character, video, or web object. After inserting it, resize and position it as needed.
Title
To add a title placeholder to a layout, check the Title box. Uncheck it to remove it.
Hide Background Graphics
To hide objects inherited from the feedback master on a specific layout, check the Hide Background Graphics box. Hidden objects won’t appear in your published course for any feedback layers based on that layout.
Change Layouts for Existing Feedback Layers
To change the layout for an existing feedback layer, switch to Slide view and select the feedback layer you want to edit in the Feedback Layers panel. Then do any of the following:
- Go to the Home tab, click Apply Layout, and choose a layout.
- Right-click the slide workspace, scroll to Apply Layout, and choose a layout.
- Right-click the slide thumbnail in the Scenes panel, scroll to Apply Layout, and choose a layout.
