Understand Articulate MCP

Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that lets AI tools securely connect to external services. Articulate MCP uses this connection to bridge your AI chat tool, such as Claude, ChatGPT, or Copilot, to your Articulate 360 account. Once the connection is established, the work you start in chat can show up where you actually build.

Articulate MCP lets you do two things from your AI chat tool:

• Build training. Describe your course topic, audience, and goals, and AI generates a draft outline in Rise 360, ready for you to review and build on. Frontline customers can also initiate kit generation the same way.

Note: Generating a kit consumes credits. Learn more about credits in this user guide.

• Browse existing training. List and filter your existing courses and artifacts, and narrow results by title keyword, last updated date, or publish date, without switching tools.

Connect to Articulate MCP

If you’re on an organizational plan that uses Claude Enterprise, Microsoft 365 Enterprise, or ChatGPT Enterprise, Business, or Education, your IT admin must add the Articulate connector first before you can connect.

On a personal plan, you can skip this step and connect your own account directly.

Connect in Claude

1. Open your Claude desktop app or visit https://claude.ai/ in your browser.
2. Click Customize in the left sidebar, select Connectors, then click Browse in the upper right corner.
3. Search for “Articulate” in the Connectors directory.
4. Click the plus sign on the Articulate thumbnail card, then authenticate with your Articulate account when prompted. If your Articulate account uses the EU data server, select the Articulate EU version.

Connect in ChatGPT

1. Open your ChatGPT desktop app or visit https://chatgpt.com/ in your browser.
2. Click Plugins in the left sidebar, then use the search bar to find the Articulate app.
3. Click the plus sign on the Articulate thumbnail card, then authenticate with your Articulate account when prompted. If your Articulate account uses the EU data server, select the Articulate EU version.

Connect in Copilot

Copilot Chat

1. Open your Copilot desktop app or visit https://copilot.microsoft.com/ in your browser.
2. Click More agents or Explore agents in the left sidebar, search for “Articulate,” then click Articulate from the results.
3. Click Install, then once installed, click Connect and authenticate with your Articulate account when prompted. If your Articulate account uses the EU data server, select the Articulate EU version.

Copilot Cowork

1. Open your Copilot desktop app or visit https://copilot.microsoft.com/ in your browser.
2. Select the Cowork tab in the left sidebar, then click Customize. In the Discover section, click Search plugins (magnifying glass icon), search for “Articulate,” and select Articulate from the results.
3. Click Install, then, once installed, click Connect and authenticate with your Articulate account when prompted. If your Articulate account uses the EU data server, select the Articulate EU version.

Create or Browse Training 

Once you’ve connected an AI tool to your Articulate 360 account, you can start to build training by following these steps (the same steps apply to both Articulate 360 AI and Frontline):

1. Open a chat in your connected AI tool.
2. Enable or select the Articulate MCP connector.
   • Claude: Click the plus icon in the lower left of the chat box. Select Connectors, then toggle the switch for Articulate MCP.
   • ChatGPT: Click the plus icon in the lower left of the chat box. Then, select Articulate MCP.
   • Copilot: Include “Articulate” as a keyword since it doesn’t have a slash command like other AI chat tools.
3. Describe your training, including the topic, target audience, and learning goals or takeaways. For example, “Let’s create a course on new-hire onboarding” or “Let’s create a training kit in Articulate for new-hire onboarding.” You may be asked follow-up questions and shown the plan before it is generated.
4. Click Allow when the AI requests permission to run the task.
5. Click More details in the response to review training details. At this point, the course outline or kit is already generated in your Articulate 360 training library.
6. Click Generate course outline in Articulate to continue building in Rise 360.

Pro tip: The more context you give, the better your draft outline. Include details such as your audience’s experience level and any specific learner outcomes you want to achieve.

If you have other connections with your AI chat tool, you can also pull in source material from places like Google Drive, OneDrive, or Notion.

To browse existing training content:

1. Open a chat in your connected AI tool.
2. Enable or select the Articulate MCP connector.
3. Ask your AI tool to list your courses or training kits.
4. Click Allow when the AI requests permission to run the task.
5. (Optional) Filter or narrow results by describing what you're looking for, such as:
   • Keyword in the title
   • Recently updated content
   • Training published within a date range

FAQs

Can I search my existing content by topic?

Not yet. Lookup matches by keywords in the course title, last updated date, or publication date, not by topic or content.

If you ask, "Do we have anything on data privacy?" and "data privacy" isn't in the title, it won't surface, even if the course exists. Search using a keyword you know is in the title, or narrow by date instead. Topic search is on our radar for a future update.

Can I publish or share training from my AI chat tool?

Not yet. Articulate MCP starts the work—publishing and sharing happen once you're in Rise 360 or Frontline. We're evaluating publishing and sharing for a future update.

Can I pull course or kit analytics into another tool?

Not yet. For now, Articulate MCP is a creation and lookup tool, not a reporting tool. Querying learner engagement analytics for courses, artifacts, or kits is on our roadmap.

Does connecting Articulate MCP give AI tools access to everything in my Articulate account?

No. You authenticate with your Articulate credentials, and your AI tool can only perform the actions covered in this guide, such as generating a draft outline or listing your existing training. It's not a backdoor into your Articulate account.

Can my organization turn off Articulate MCP for everyone?

Not from within Articulate. Since Articulate MCP connects through your AI platform, your admin manages access the same way they'd manage any other connector, using the workspace settings for Claude, ChatGPT, or Copilot.

Why did I get a course outline instead of a kit prompt (or the other way around)?

This depends on the kind of user you are, not on what you request. Articulate 360 AI users receive the course outline flow, while Frontline users receive the kit creation flow. If you expected one but received the other, check which product your Articulate account is linked to.
