Content Won't Resume After Updating Course Files in an LMS or Web Server

Article Last Updated Jul 29, 2025

This article applies to:

When you update existing live courses in your learning management system (LMS) or web server, you can choose to overwrite the current course files. For many LMS platforms, including SCORM Cloud, choosing this option also deletes the “resume data”—data that would allow individual learners to return to the course and resume it from where they left off. Other platforms, like Moodle, retain the old resume data, but structural differences may cause the resume process to fail anyway.

As a result, learners who start a course may not be able to resume where they left off once you update the course on your LMS or web server. To avoid confusion when updating courses that have already been delivered to learners, we suggest using one of these approaches:

  • Clear the learners’ resume data manually when updating a course if your LMS allows it.
  • Instruct learners to select Restart instead of Resume when they’re prompted to continue a course.
