Transform passive videos into hands-on learning experiences. Start with a video or screen recording and let AI add chapters, pop-up content, and knowledge checks. Then, customize it to meet your audience's needs. Read on to learn how.

Generate an Interactive Video

Nova analyzes your video, then adds chapters, automatically generates a transcript and captions, and creates checkpoints at logical points in the video or screen recording you provide.

Your video must include audio explaining what you're documenting and/or step-by-step instructions on how to achieve the results. Source videos can be up to 45 minutes or 500 MB.

From your dashboard, select Interactive Video and follow the content creation process. You can also generate a new interactive video from the library.

Once generation is complete, the interactive video editor opens. It's divided into three main sections:

  • Video player: top of the interface, where you interact with your video directly
  • Checkpoints: below the video player, where you modify and add chapter and checkpoint content
  • Video outline: left sidebar, where you can quickly modify and jump to chapters and checkpoints in the Checkpoints window

Manage the Video

Manage your video using the video player at the top of the interface. Chapter and checkpoint markers appear along the timeline, with player controls below. As you scroll down the page, the player shrinks into a scaled-down version that appears above the video outline on the left so it stays visible.

Your interactive video's title appears above the video player. Click it to edit the title. To edit the description, click the down arrow next to the title, then click the text. Highlighting any text in the description or checkpoint blocks opens the text formatting toolbar.

Directly under the player are playback options to control whether users see the Chapters section and transcript.

Manage Chapters

A chapter is a titled segment, indicated by a short vertical line on the video’s timeline. Each chapter marks a point in the video where your audience can jump directly without having to watch or manually advance the video.

Every interactive video automatically includes two built-in chapters: Start and End. These appear before and after the video plays and can't be deleted or edited.

To add a new chapter:

  1. Navigate to the point in the video where you want a new chapter.
  2. At the top of the Video Outline panel, click Add at [time] and select Chapter. This inserts an untitled chapter with a relevant thumbnail into the video outline at the appropriate chronological spot.
  3. Hover over the newly inserted chapter, then click the pencil icon to edit the title.
  4. To adjust a chapter’s timing:
    1. In the checkpoint window, hover over the timestamp to the right of the title.
    2. Click and enter the new time in hh:mm:ss format.

To delete a chapter:

  1. Hover over the chapter you want to delete in either the video outline or checkpoints window and click the Delete icon.
  2. Click Delete to confirm.

Deleting a chapter doesn't delete its checkpoints but moves them to the preceding chapter.

Manage Checkpoints

Indicated by diamond shapes on the video timeline, checkpoints are grouped within chapters. A checkpoint pauses the video at a specific point and displays additional content or requires an audience interaction before proceeding.

Checkpoints are built with the same block types that you use to build other content in Articulate 360 AI. While the checkpoint toolbar offers quick links to knowledge check, flashcard, and text blocks, all block types are available.

Here’s how to add a checkpoint:

  1. Jump to the point in the video where you want a new checkpoint.
  2. At the top of the Video Outline panel, click Add at [time] and select Checkpoint. This inserts a blank checkpoint card into the video outline at the appropriate chronological spot.

Or, in the Checkpoints panel, click Add checkpoint within a chapter.
  3. Select a block from the toolbar or click Block library in the newly created checkpoint card. The checkpoint won't appear in the video until a block is added.

Change the checkpoint title by clicking and editing the existing text. Adjust a checkpoint’s timing by clicking the timestamp value in the upper-right corner and editing it.

To delete a checkpoint, hover over it and click the Delete icon next to the checkpoint title, then confirm your action. Checkpoints aren't deleted when their chapters are deleted and must be deleted individually.

Add as many checkpoints as needed within each chapter. Each checkpoint card can contain multiple blocks. Add additional blocks by clicking the + icon under or above the existing block and selecting a block from the block library.

If you want your audience to complete a checkpoint activity before continuing, add a block with interactions (such as a knowledge check or flashcard block) and enable Required interactions in the bottom-left corner of the checkpoint card.

Modifying Block Content

You can modify and manage blocks within a checkpoint card as you would any other block content. Note that bulk block actions aren't available at this time.

Edit inline or hover over the checkpoint and click the Content icon to open the sidebar editor. Click the AI Block Tools icon to edit or convert a checkpoint block, or to add audio with AI.

Preview Your Interactive Video

Click the Preview button at the top right to view your interactive video as your audience will see it.

  • The play icon in the center of the video controls playback.
  • Click Show transcript (if available) to read along as the video plays.
  • In the Chapters section below the video, click a chapter thumbnail to jump to that point.
  • Use the desktop, tablet, and mobile icons in the top-right to see how your content looks on different devices.
