Generate a Guide
A guide breaks a process into numbered, sequential steps, pairing each step with a clear action and a visual so your audience can follow along without guesswork.
In Frontline, a guide isn't generated on its own; it's added as an artifact within a kit in one of two ways:
- Added to the artifacts Nova plans to generate when creating a kit
- Added as a new artifact to a kit you've already built
A video or screen recording with audio is required as source material to generate a guide, so before you get started, make sure you have one available.
Your video must include audio explaining what you're documenting and/or step-by-step instructions for achieving the results. Source videos can be up to 45 minutes or 500 MB.
Generating a guide consumes credits. Learn more about credits in this user guide.
Edit Step Content and Visuals
When you open a guide from your kit’s overview page, you'll see your steps laid out top to bottom as individual blocks. Each relevant step is paired with a screenshot from your source material, if available.
Edit the step title or description by clicking it. For non-text content, hover over a step and click the Content icon (a pencil) in the left-floating toolbar to open the Edit Step panel, then:
To add media:
- Click Upload media (folder icon).
- Select a method:
- Upload media. Upload a file from your computer.
- Generate with AI. Generate an image using AI.
- Search your sources. Use images from your uploaded source material.
- Search Content Library. Search the content library for stock images.
- Embed from web. Embed videos and other objects hosted on the web.
To edit or replace media, select an option next to the image thumbnail:
- Annotate image. Add text, boxes, lines, highlighting, or freehand drawing to call attention to what matters.
- Replace image. Choose from your local files, the content library, your source material, AI generation, or a web object.
- Crop image. Adjust image cropping.
- Edit alt tag. Add or edit the image alt text.
- Remove. Delete the image.
To add audio:
- Click Add audio (microphone icon). This opens the Course media window.
- Choose what to insert:
- AI audio. A text-to-speech narration.
- Record. A recording of your own voice.
- Upload. An audio file from your computer.
To replace audio:
- Click the three-dot menu icon to the right of the audio seekbar, just below the step title.
- Click Edit audio.
- Choose to replace with AI audio, a new recording, or an uploaded file.
Adjust a step's appearance using the left-floating toolbar.
- Click the Style icon (a palette) to set a background color from the predefined options or an image. Uncheck Card style for a plain white background.
- Click the Format icon (a set square) to adjust corner radius and block padding using the sliders.
Add, Reorder, Duplicate, and Delete Steps
Add a step by clicking the plus icon in the bottom toolbar, or hovering between two existing steps and clicking the plus sign that appears.
To reorder a step, hover over it, then click the up or down arrow in the right-floating toolbar. Inserting or reordering a step automatically renumbers the rest, keeping your sequence accurate. You can duplicate a step by clicking the paper icon or delete it by clicking the trash icon.
Update Content with AI
If you want to edit wording, tone, audience, and more using AI, click the sparkle icon in the upper-right corner. AI can rewrite, shorten, or rephrase content throughout your guide. Explore our detailed guide to bulk-updating content using AI.
Manage Other Block Types
Step blocks are the backbone of a guide, while other block types provide context, media, and feedback:
- Text. Rich-text block for framing or recapping content outside the step sequence.
- Video. Standalone video block with captions.
- Note. Callout for tips or key takeaways.
- Survey. Feedback block for collecting ratings or responses.
Manage other blocks the same way as step blocks. Click any text to edit it directly, then use the Content menu for media and audio, the Style menu for background and card colors, and the Format menu to adjust radius and padding.
To reorder, duplicate, or delete a block, hover over it and use the right-floating toolbar.
Share Your Guide
Quickly share your guide by clicking the Share button in the top right while editing the content, or go to your kit’s overview page and click the Share button on the artifact’s thumbnail card. This opens the Share window, where you can generate a link.
Before generating a link, you can configure a few options, including:
- Turning on Push live updates so viewers always see your latest edits (on by default).
- Requiring viewers to enter their name and email under Name and email required (on by default).
- Setting the Expected audience to estimate how many people will open the content. (Only available if the Name and email required toggle is enabled.)
- Password-protecting the link so viewers need a password to access it (off by default).
Once you’re done configuring the share settings, click Generate link to create the share link. To copy the link, click Copy link.
To export a guide as a PDF, click the Export tab in the sidebar of the Share window, then click Download. Note that audio and video won’t play in the exported PDF.
