Frontline: Customizing a Scenario

Article Last Updated Sep 10, 2026

This article applies to:

Help your team members practice difficult conversations before they have them for real. Let Nova build a branching scenario from your prompt and source material—complete with dialogue, choices, and feedback tailored to your training needs. Read on to learn more.

Generate a Scenario

A scenario puts your audience in a realistic, branching conversation organized into scenes. Each scene is a self-contained branch of dialogue with its own goal, and the scenes connect in sequence.

In Frontline, a scenario isn't generated on its own; it's added as an artifact within a kit, in one of two ways:

  • Added to the artifacts Nova plans to generate when creating a kit
  • Added as a new artifact to a kit you've already built

Generating a scenario consumes credits. Learn more about credits in this user guide.

Navigate the Scenario Editor

From your kit's overview page, click your scenario's thumbnail card. This opens your scenario’s landing page, which includes a title, cover image, the scenario block itself, and a shortcuts bar for adding supporting blocks.

To open the scenario editor, hover over the scenario block, then click Content (pencil icon) in the left-floating toolbar. The scenario editor is split into two main areas—the Scenes panel on the left, and the editing canvas on the right. Then, in the upper-right corner, near the X icon for closing the editor, you’ll find the Experience settings and viewing modes.

Scenes Panel

The Scenes panel on the left lists every scene in your scenario and doubles as a navigation menu. Since the editing canvas displays only one scene at a time, click a scene heading or a card heading from the list to display it on the right.

Editing Canvas

Click and drag anywhere on the canvas to move things around or bring cards into focus. For canvas options, click Canvas options (horizontal sliders icon) in the lower-left corner. Here, you can select a Connector type: Curved (the default), Elbow, or Straight, and a Background style: Dots (the default), Grid, or Plain.

To zoom in or out, click the magnifying glass icons in the upper-right corner of the editing canvas. The zoom percentage will be displayed in the lower-left corner.

In the top center of the editing canvas, a permanent Add card button lets you add a new card to your scene whenever needed.

Experience Settings

Choose how your audience will experience the scenario you’re building. Click the Experience button in the top-right corner, then choose between:

  • Chat: A text-only conversation similar to messaging
  • Character photo + Chat: A conversation with a character that changes expressions based on the text the user selects

This applies to every card in the scenario.

Note that the Character photo + Chat experience works only when you add a character to your scene.

Viewing Mode

To switch between editing and preview modes, click the corresponding button in the top-right corner, next to the Experience button.

Clicking Preview lets you see your scenario from your audience’s perspective, while Edit returns you to the editor.

Create and Edit Scenes

Your scenario already includes a few scenes. To edit a scene, select its scene heading in the Scenes panel to expand it and display it on the editing canvas.

To create a new scene, follow these steps:

  1. Click the New scene button at the bottom of the Scenes panel. This adds an untitled scene to the list.
  2. Edit the title and add a goal in the fields provided at the top-left corner of the editing canvas. The goal you enter here determines the feedback your audience will receive after completing the scenario, indicating whether they accomplished the goals you set for each scene based on their choices.

To delete a scene, hover over a scene heading from the Scenes panel, then click the trash icon next to it.

Tip: You can minimize the Scenes panel to create more space for editing your scene by clicking the X icon in the panel's upper-right corner.

Add and Edit Cards

Each scene is made up of cards linked to one another using connectors. Available cards include:

  • Character card. Used to create a character dialogue
  • Text card. Used to display a message to your audience
  • Decision card. A set of responses your audience can choose from

To insert a new card, click the plus sign on the Scene start button, then choose a card type from the dropdown menu. Alternatively, you can click the Add card button at the top of the editing canvas.

Start with a Character card to insert a dialogue, then follow these steps to edit the card content:

  1. Click the Character card’s edit button (pencil icon in top-right corner).
  2. Add your character’s dialogue in the text box provided.
  3. (Optional) Click Edit character to insert a character image, select an emotion, then add a name. Learn more about creating or editing a character.
  4. Click Done.

Once you have a Character card set up, insert and connect a Decision card to it. Here’s how:

  1. Click the plus sign on the Character card or click the Add card button at the top, then select Decision from the dropdown menu.
  2. Click the Decision card’s edit button.
  3. Write a response in the text box provided. This will be used as a choice your audience can select.
  4. Mark the response as a Correct, Neutral, or Incorrect answer using the dropdown in the lower left. Answers are tied to an automated scoring system that’s enabled by default and displayed when your audience completes the scenario. There’s no option to disable it at this time.
  5. Click the Branch to link, then choose a destination or result. It can go to a specific card (either new or existing), or the start of a scene, or restart or end the scenario.
  6. (Optional) Click the plus sign at the bottom to add a new choice.
  7. Click Done.

Repeat the steps above as many times as needed to align with the goal you set for the scene. At any point when you’d like to display a message, use the Text card.

  1. Click the plus sign on a Character or Decision card, or click the Add card button at the top, then select Text.
  2. Click the Text card’s edit button.
  3. Add your message in the text box provided.
  4. Click Done.

Connect Your Cards

Branching happens with the help of connectors—lines that link cards to each other. If you create a new card by clicking the plus sign on an existing card, a connector is automatically created linking the two cards.

If you insert a new card by clicking the Add card button at the top, it isn’t linked to any existing card by default. To manually link a card, follow these steps:

  1. Click and hold the plus sign from the starting card.
  2. Drag your mouse to reveal the connector.
  3. Drop the connector onto the target card you want to link to.

Delete a connector by hovering over it, then clicking the X icon in the middle.

Create and Edit Characters

Each scenario can have one character. Either select from our library of photorealistic and illustrated characters or create your own with uploaded images and prompts.

Get started by clicking Edit character on a Character card, then choose the character you want to use in the character selection window.

Use an Existing Character

  1. Select a character from the existing library of photorealistic and illustrated characters.
  2. (Optional) Use filters to find specific characters by style, gender, age, or environment.
  3. (Optional) Change the default view by clicking the All characters button, then selecting Saved characters or Stock characters. The default is All characters.
  4. Click Insert character.

Create or Customize a Character

  1. Click the Create button to create your own character, or select an existing character and click the Customize button in the preview on the right.
  2. Enter a prompt in the prompt box on the left that describes the character you want, or any changes to an existing character if you’re customizing it. The generated image will appear on the right.
  3. (Optional) If you don’t like the result, follow up with a new prompt to make any changes you want. Use the filmstrip on the right to cycle through the results.
  4. (Optional) Attach reference images to your prompt by clicking Attach (paperclip icon) in the lower-right corner, then uploading images of a character, background, logo, or any other relevant images.
  5. (Optional) Click Styles (palette icon) in the lower-right corner to apply prebuilt image styles. Choose Custom to create your own image style.
  6. (Optional) Click Prompt assist (sparkle icon) in the lower-right corner to use prebuilt prompts or enhance your prompts with AI.
  7. Click Save character in the bottom-right corner once you’re finished.
  8. Click Insert character to populate your scenario with your updated character.

Upload a Character

If you have an existing character image you’d like to use, you can upload it. Click the Upload button next to Create, then select a file from your computer. Uploaded character images will be added to your Saved characters.

Format Your Scenario Block

On the scenario’s landing page, hover over the scenario block, click Style (palette icon) in the left-floating toolbar to change the block’s background. You can select a different color or replace the default AI image.

To adjust the block’s padding, click Format (set square icon) in the left-floating toolbar, then select a padding preset.

Add Supporting Blocks

If you need other kinds of blocks—for example, to introduce or summarize your scenario—you can add supporting blocks. Here’s how:

  1. Go to your scenario’s landing page.
  2. Select a block type you’d like to add from the blocks menu at the bottom.
    • Button stack: Link to related resources.
    • Text: Provide additional written content.
    • Survey: Collect feedback.

Update Content with AI

If you want to edit wording, tone, audience, and more using AI, click the sparkle icon in the upper-right corner of the landing page. AI can rewrite, shorten, or rephrase content throughout your scenario. Explore our detailed guide to bulk-updating content using AI.

Preview and Share Your Scenario

At any time, you can preview your scenario to see exactly how it looks and behaves before you share it. Test interactive functionality, device responsiveness, navigation, and more.

Click Preview (eye icon) in the upper-right corner to enter preview mode. Learn more about previewing your training in this user guide.

When you’re ready to share, click the Share button in the top right while editing the content, or go to your kit’s overview page and click the Share button on the artifact’s thumbnail card. This opens the Share window, where you can generate a link.

Before generating a link, you can configure a few options, including:

  • Turning on Push live updates so viewers always see your latest edits (on by default).
  • Requiring viewers to enter their name and email under Name and email required (on by default).
    • Setting the Expected audience to estimate how many people will open the content. Only available if the Name and email required toggle is enabled.
  • Password-protecting the link so viewers need a password to access it (off by default).

Once you’re done configuring the share settings, click Generate link to create the share link. To copy the link, click Copy link.

Exporting to PDF is not supported for scenarios. Learn more about Quick Share in this user guide.
