Generate a Quick Reference
A quick reference is a short, focused training generated from your prompt and source material. It’s designed to get your audience up to speed on the essentials fast.
In Frontline, a quick reference isn't generated on its own; it's added as an artifact within a kit, in one of two ways:
- Added to the artifacts Nova plans to generate when creating a kit
- Added as a new artifact to a kit you've already built
Generating a quick reference consumes credits. Learn more about credits in this user guide.
Navigate the Overview Page
When you open a quick reference, you land on its overview page. The title, author, and intro or description appear at the top, followed by lessons and a quiz. Edit any text on this page by clicking it directly.
Each item lists its type, either lesson or quiz, just below its title. Hover over a lesson or quiz to see three horizontal dots appear next to Edit Content. Click the dots to access additional options, such as changing its icon, duplicating it, copying it to another quick reference, copying its link, or deleting it.
Edit Lesson Content
On the overview page, click Edit Content next to a lesson to open it for editing. A lesson is composed of different block types for presenting content, including text, image, and interactive blocks. Most block types have different variants. Check out this user guide to learn more about the different block types and variants.
Insert a New Block
Hover between two blocks and click the plus sign to open the Block library, then click a block type to see its variants and insert one.
You can also use the shortcuts bar at the bottom of the page. Click a block type to insert it directly, or click Block library to open the full panel for more options.
Modify Text Blocks
Editing text blocks is as simple as selecting the text and applying your changes. When you highlight any text, a formatting toolbar appears below the text, which allows you to:
- Edit with AI
- Change the font style, size, color, highlight color, and format
- Insert a link
- Change text alignment
- Turn text into an ordered or unordered list
- Adjust indentation, line height, and letter spacing
- Insert a Math equation
- Select all text
- Clear text formatting
You can also modify the content of a text block using the side panel editor. Hover over a text block, then click Content (a pencil icon) from the left-floating toolbar.
Modify Image Blocks
Unlike text blocks, image blocks can’t be edited directly, so you’ll need to use the side panel editor. Hover over an image block, click Content from the left-floating toolbar to open the side panel editor, then choose your desired action.
To edit or replace the image, select an option next to the image thumbnail:
- Replace image. Choose from your local files, the content library, your source material, AI generation, or a web object.
- Crop image. Adjust image cropping.
- Edit alt tag. Add or edit the image alt text.
- Edit link. Link the image to a lesson.
To add audio:
- Click the Add audio icon (a microphone). This opens the Course media window.
- Choose what to insert:
- AI audio. Use a text-to-speech narration.
- Record. Use your microphone to record audio.
- Upload. Use an audio file from your computer.
To replace audio:
- Click the three-dot menu icon to the right of the audio seekbar, just below the step title.
- Click Edit audio.
- Choose to replace with AI audio, a new recording, or an uploaded file.
Modify Interactive Blocks
Some interactive blocks, like tabs or accordions, contain text that can be edited directly, while others, such as process or sorting activity blocks, can be edited only in the side panel editor.
To edit interactive blocks that can’t be edited directly, follow these steps:
- Hover over the block.
- Click Content from the left-floating toolbar.
- Select any text in the side panel editor to edit it.
- Add or edit an image or web object by clicking Upload media (a folder icon) if needed, and the block type supports it.
- Add or edit audio by clicking Add audio if needed and if the block type supports it.
- Reorder items by dragging and dropping if needed, and if the block type supports it.
Switch Block Variants
You can switch between variants for block types with two or more variants. For example, switch from a Paragraph with heading to Statement A. Here’s how:
- Hover over the block.
- Click Block Selector from the left-floating toolbar.
- Select a new variant.
Switch Block Style
- Hover over the block.
- Click Style from the left-floating toolbar.
- Select a new background color or use an image.
- Uncheck Card style to apply a white background to the content card if needed and if the block type supports it.
Modify Block Formatting
Block-level formatting varies by block type and variant. To see available settings, hover over the block, then click Format in the left-floating toolbar. Adjust any setting as needed, such as content width, block padding, audio position, and more.
Use AI Block Tools
If available, click AI Block Tools (sparkle icon) in the left-floating toolbar to edit the block’s content with AI, add AI audio, or instantly convert the block to another type.
Reorder, Duplicate, and Delete Blocks
The floating toolbar on the right lets you reorder, duplicate, delete, or copy the link to the block.
- Click the arrow icons to move the block up or down.
- Click the paper icon to duplicate the block.
- Click the trash icon to delete the block.
- Click the three-dot icon to get a link to the block.
Edit Quiz Content
Click Edit Content next to a quiz on the overview page to open its title screen. From there, you can edit the quiz title, the author's name visibility, and the description.
In the left panel, click a question under Question Order to open it. Edit the question, answer options, and feedback manually, or click the Edit with AI button for AI help. If needed, you can add media or audio to your question by clicking the folder or microphone icon.
To reorder the questions, click the drag handle on the left and drag a question up or down. To duplicate or delete a question, click the three-dot icon on the right, then select Duplicate or Delete.
Add new questions by clicking Add question in the bottom left. Choose from four different question types: Multiple choice, Multiple response, Fill in the blank, and Matching. Or click Generate with AI to have AI draft questions for you to review and approve before inserting.
Update Content with AI
If you want to edit wording, tone, audience, and more using AI, click the sparkle icon in the upper-right corner of a lesson or overview page. AI can rewrite, shorten, or rephrase content throughout your quick reference. Explore our detailed guide to bulk-updating content using AI.
Preview and Share Your Quick Reference
At any time, you can preview your quick reference to see exactly how it looks and behaves before you share it. Test interactive functionality, device responsiveness, navigation, and more.
Click Preview (eye icon) in the upper-right corner to enter preview mode. Learn more about previewing your training in this user guide.
When you’re ready to share, click the Share button in the top right while editing the content, or go to your kit’s overview page and click the Share button on the artifact’s thumbnail card. This opens the Share window, where you can generate a link.
Before generating a link, you can configure a few options, including:
- Turning on Push live updates so viewers always see your latest edits (on by default).
- Requiring viewers to enter their name and email under Name and email required (on by default).
- Setting the Expected audience to estimate how many people will open the content. Only available if the Name and email required toggle is enabled.
- Password-protecting the link so viewers need a password to access it (off by default).
Once you’re done configuring the share settings, click Generate link to create the share link. To copy the link, click Copy link.
To export a PDF version of your quick reference, click the Export tab in the sidebar of the Share window, then click Download. Note that audio and video won’t play in the exported PDF.
