Generate an Interactive Video

In Frontline, an interactive video isn't generated on its own; it's added as an artifact within a kit, in one of two ways:

• Added to the artifacts Nova plans to generate when creating a kit
• Added as a new artifact to a kit you've already built

A video or screen recording with audio is required as source material to generate an interactive video. Your video must include audio explaining what you're documenting and/or step-by-step instructions on how to achieve the results. Source videos can be up to 45 minutes or 500 MB. Nova adds chapters, a transcript, captions, and checkpoints on top of it.

Navigate the Interactive Video Editor

Once an interactive video has been generated as part of a new kit or added to an existing kit, you can click the thumbnail card for the video on the kit's overview page to open the interactive video editor. The editor is divided into three main sections: the video player on the right, the checkpoints section below it, and the video outline panel on the left.

Your interactive video's title appears above the video player. Click it to edit the title. To edit the description, click the down arrow next to the title, then click the description text that appears.

Highlighting any text in the description or checkpoint blocks opens an inline formatting toolbar, which lets you:

• Edit with AI
• Change the font style, size, color, highlight color, and format
• Insert a link
• Change text alignment
• Turn text into an ordered or unordered list
• Adjust indentation, line height, and letter spacing
• Insert a Math equation
• Select all text
• Clear text formatting

You can also modify a checkpoint block's content using the side panel editor. Hover over the block, then click Content (pencil icon) in the left-floating toolbar. To edit or convert a checkpoint block, or to add audio with AI, click AI Block Tools (sparkle icon) instead.

Video Player

Use this section to interact directly with your video. Chapter markers appear along the timeline, with player controls below. As you scroll down the page, the player shrinks into a scaled-down version in the top-left corner, so it stays visible.

The toggle settings for showing chapters and the transcript appear below the video preview. Click Edit transcript next to those toggles to edit the video transcript.

Checkpoints

From here, you can build and manage interactive checkpoints or edit and delete chapters.

Video Outline

This left sidebar shows how many chapters and checkpoints your video has. Add new chapters and checkpoints, edit chapter and checkpoint titles, or delete them right here.

Manage Chapters

A chapter is a titled segment of your interactive video, indicated by short vertical lines along the video’s timeline. Each chapter marks a point in the video where a new topic or section begins, allowing your audience to jump straight to it instead of scrubbing through the whole video.

To add a new chapter, follow these steps:

1. Play your video to the point where you want a new chapter.
2. Click Add at [time] in the Video outline panel. This inserts an untitled chapter with a relevant thumbnail into the list below, following the order in which they appear in the video.
3. Hover over the newly inserted chapter, then click the pencil icon to edit the title.
4. (Optional) Adjust a chapter’s timing by selecting and editing the timestamp shown on the right in the Checkpoints section. Enter the new time in hh:mm:ss format.

Every interactive video includes built-in chapters: Start, which appears before the video begins, and End, which appears after the video finishes playing. You can use these built-in chapters to insert a checkpoint before or after the video plays.

To delete a chapter, hover over it in the Video outline panel, click the trash icon next to it, then click Delete to confirm. Or, go to the Checkpoints section on the right, hover over the chapter you want to delete, then click the trash icon next to it. Deleting a chapter will move its checkpoints to the preceding chapter. Built-in chapters can’t be edited or deleted.

Manage Checkpoints

A checkpoint pauses the video at a specific point, allowing your audience to complete an activity before continuing. It’s indicated by small circles along the video’s timeline.

Checkpoints are different types of content blocks designed to engage your audience., Some are text-only, and others are interactive, like a knowledge check. See this user guide to learn more about the blocks you can use in your interactive video.

Here’s how to add a checkpoint block:

1. Click Add checkpoint within a chapter in the Checkpoints section.
2. Select the block you want to use: either a knowledge check, flashcards, or text.
3. Click the Block library button if you’re looking for a different block type. This opens a sidebar panel with additional block types to choose from.

If you want to require your audience to complete a checkpoint activity before continuing, enable the Required to continue toggle in the bottom-left corner of the checkpoint card. Note that this only works on an interactive block. Otherwise, your audience will always be able to continue.

By default, the new checkpoint is titled “Checkpoint.” You can change it by clicking the title and entering a custom title.

To adjust a checkpoint’s timing, click the timestamp in the upper-right corner of the checkpoint card to edit it.

To delete a checkpoint, hover over it, click the trash icon next to the checkpoint title, then click Delete to confirm.

Pro tip: While you can add as many checkpoints as you want within each chapter, checkpoint generation adds one checkpoint per chapter to assess understanding. Adding more may disrupt the flow of learning without providing any benefit, so review placement and content before sharing your interactive video.

Update Content with AI

If you want to edit wording, tone, audience, and more using AI, click the sparkle icon in the upper-right corner while in edit mode. AI can rewrite, shorten, or rephrase content throughout your interactive video. Explore our detailed guide to bulk-updating content using AI.

Preview and Share Your Interactive Video

At any time, you can preview your interactive video to see exactly how it looks and behaves before you share it. Test interactive functionality, device responsiveness, navigation, and more.

Click Preview (eye icon) in the upper-right corner to enter preview mode. Learn more about previewing your training in this user guide.

When you’re ready to share, click the Share button in the top right while editing the content, or go to your kit’s overview page and click the Share button on the artifact’s thumbnail card. This opens the Share window, where you can generate a link.

Before generating a link, you can configure a few options, including:

• Turning on Push live updates so viewers always see your latest edits (on by default).
• Requiring viewers to enter their name and email under Name and email required (on by default).
  • Setting the Expected audience to estimate how many people will open the content. Only available if the Name and email required toggle is enabled.
• Password-protecting the link so viewers need a password to access it (off by default).

Once you’re done configuring the share settings, click Generate link to create the share link. To copy the link, click Copy link.
